Asking more of ourselves and each other
Colourful Animals, Artist Unknown
Perhaps we should shift the conversation when we are working with a design team. There are several times that design professionals have told me ‘you can only ever be as creative as your client will allow’ or that ‘the work was never done in such a remarkable way, because the man with finance, said no.’ In addition, I came across a design magazine called FRAME, which is dedicated to visionary work by ‘the most visionary clients and the most visionary designers.’ Property Developer Ian Schrager has an entire monograph dedicated to his work because the man knew how to see. Perhaps it is all our responsibility to know what the role of aesthetic is not just for the person we are working with but as a society. Maybe the question is less about what can you do ‘on time’ and on ‘budget’ but what is the best that we can do together, that challenges and excites the person you are working with and how collectively one can help progress a particular field.
